FARIDA AND MASHRU

(from Zanzibar Island, Tanzania)

When Farida met Mashru, she immediately knew they were going to make great friends. "But Zanzibar is a small island, you know. Women cannot really be friends with men outside their family. The society doesn't take it well",says Farida.

Farida had been married to her husband for five years, when he left her and their baby boy for another woman. He moved to the big city and never looked back. She decided to become independent and start sewing clothes. She was soon joined by Mashru to share the load.

"After I was left alone, I didn't care what people will think. Because they didn't care about me. Mashru was a good friend and he wanted to help. We have been running this small shop for six years now. We work every day, even Sundays. It's like home. And my son loves his uncle Mashru."

The Colour Bug is very excited to be part of their journey.
